The Straw-headed Bulbul (Pycnonotus zeylanicus), a critically endangered songbird prized for its melodious song, faces heavy trapping in Southeast Asia. While populations in neighbouring regions have declined, Singapore remains a vital stronghold.
Constant vigilance against poaching and habitat improvements are crucial for the long-term survival of the Straw-headed Bulbul.
The Straw-headed Bulbul Working Group was formed in 2021, co-chaired by NParks and the Nature Society Singapore (NSS). It comprises members from a range of backgrounds and affiliations including the National University of Singapore (NUS), Birdlife International, and both Mandai Nature and Mandai Wildlife Group.
The working group has developed a National Species Action Plan for the Straw-headed Bulbul to guide conservation efforts for Singapore's Straw-headed Bulbul population for the next 5 years.
