Bazaar in the Garden (BIG) is here to celebrate the season of spring and all things blooming! Join the tours, talks or demonstrations to expand your knowledge on biodiversity and edibles or start a new interest. From the wide selection of plants, produce and crafts by local gardeners and makers at the lifestyle market to workshops on woodworkig and bee hotel building, there’s plenty to see and do at BIG!

 

 

Hop on the free shuttle service to Gardenhouse which runs from 8 am to 4 pm.

Learn about the rich biodiversity at the Jurong Lake Gardens! Breathe in the fresh air and listen to the delightful sounds of nature on this free guided walk. 

 

Dress comfortably and wear suitable footwear. Bring along a water bottle, a hat, and a camera to take lots of photos!

Craft with Us: It’s Spring!

Come along with friends and family to craft a spring necklace at our drop-in stations and unleash your creativity in this fun colouring activity. Choose your favourite pretty blooms and wild critters like the Lime Butterfly, Allamanda flower, Common Greenback Frog or Black-naped Oriole, and string them up into a cool necklace!

 

 

Bird-watching Guided Walk

Join the Taman Jurong Bird Watchers Group (Nature Kakis chapter) for their monthly guided walk in the Gardens to observe the various species of birds and their habitats. 

 

In this introductory session led by volunteer guides, you will gain basic knowledge of our feathered friends in the Gardens. Binoculars and notes will be provided to learn and observe as a group.

 

Dress comfortably with covered shoes. Bring along your shades, cap, and binoculars if you have them.

Leap into the world of flowers as Mindy Neo shares enchanting tales of friendship, generosity and wisdom! Learn more about the flora and fauna in spring and craft a lovely paper flower to take home.  

 

 

Mindy is a member of the Storytelling Association (Singapore). She enjoys connecting with adults and children through the ancient art of storytelling. She loves insights and lessons best when they’re wrapped in funny or poignant stories.

Crafted from Nature: Spring Blooms

Join us for a morning of woodworking and explore the artistry of crafting with recycled timber sourced from tree pruning works in our green spaces, including Jurong Lake Gardens. In this workshop, Aileen Toh will guide you to shape, colour and assemble wood to create a spring-inspired work of art. Discover the joy of woodworking while learning more about the trees in Singapore!

 

 

A winner of the prestigious CDL Singapore Sculpture Award in 2016, Aileen combines her remarkable talent with sustainability and creates captivating sculptures using upcycled wood. She has held eight solo exhibitions that featured her sculptures. She is also among the many talented artists of the Sculpture Society (Singapore) committed to fostering public appreciation for wood sculpting.

Edibles Demonstration

Embark on a flavourful journey in this workshop on edible plants, conducted by Geok Kuan and Michelle Tan! Start with a tour of Jurong Lake Garden’s vibrant Edible Demonstration Garden, engage in on-the-spot harvesting and witness the magic as you pluck fresh ingredients for your culinary creations. Transition to a hands-on session in the classroom where you will master the art of making delectable omelettes and refreshing milkshakes. There will also be vegan alternatives such as oat milk and cha om to suit everyone’s preferences! This workshop will expand your culinary horizons as we explore uncommon edible greens, unveiling a world of unique tastes and nutritional benefits.

 

 

Geok Kuan, founder of Juan Tea and Juan Herbal Cuisine, is a dedicated advocate for utilising locally grown and wild edibles in culinary endeavours and beyond. Since April 2017, she has passionately shared her beliefs and practices through engaging public workshops, fostering a community of individuals eager to explore the bounty of nature. In December 2020, she published her first Chinese book, titled 都市野菜小品, which offers readers a deeper understanding of edibles that thrive in Singapore.

 

 

 

Michelle is the Founder and Tribe Chief of Urban Jungle Folks (UJF), a social enterprise which promotes the adoption of sustainable lifestyle practices in our daily interaction with food. An expert guide and educator, Michelle conducts tours and workshops on identifying local edible plants as alternatives to commonly used ingredients for cooking and teaches environmentally-friendly food waste management techniques, such as composting and using food scraps to make cleaning products.

Solitary Bees: Building a Bee Hotel

Want to create more buzz around your garden? Join us for this workshop by Bryan Leong to learn more about the solitary bees that call Singapore home. While these bees do not make honey, they represent a large majority of bee species and are more efficient pollinators than honey bees. Get hands on and build your own bee hotel with us.

 

A manager at NParks for four years, Bryan has had the opportunity to work with various wildlife around Singapore, including the corals at Sisters' Islands Marine Park and the langurs in the central catchment area. He is always on the lookout for interesting nature projects to be involved in. Bryan currently works at Jurong Lake Gardens, and his latest project is studying the biodiversity of bees in Jurong Lake Gardens by constructing bee hotels of varying sizes.

Intermediate Kombucha: Flavour and Fizz

2 pm – 3 pm

With different flavours such as lemon ginger, blueberry cinnamon or strawberry lavender, kombucha is a fermented tea drink that allows for a wonderful range of experimentation at the second stage of fermentation. In this talk, Pearly Ma will cover the basic steps for making kombucha, followed by a discussion on the various flavours and fizz levels that can be achieved from fruits, juices, spices and herbs. If you love fizzy flavourful drinks or enjoy playing with flavour combinations, this is a talk not to be missed!

 

 

Pearly is a librarian with the National Library Board, where she organises sustainability programmes for seniors. She likes kombucha for its fizz and refreshing flavour and has made over 30 batches to date. She also makes ginger beer, another fantastic fermented home-brew!

By driving: Turn into Japanese Garden Rd, and park at Jurong Lake Gardens South Carpark. Walk in to the Gardenhouse.

 

By public transport: Alight at Lakeside MRT. Take buses 49, 154 or 154B and alight at Japanese Garden/Opp Blk 115 bus stop (Bus stop ID: 21639). Walk in to the Gardenhouse.
