When water temperatures rise, corals lose their source of food and become more susceptible to diseases. As a result they turn white, in a process known as coral bleaching.
To safeguard local hard corals from bleaching, a purpose-built reef structure was sunk in the waters off Small Sister's Island, establishing a coral nursery within the JTC-NParks Reef Garden.
