The Yishun Arboretum serves as a living gallery of Dipterocarps, a family of tropical hardwood trees. Look for more than 800 trees of over 70 species, spread out across Yishun Park.

Special features about Dipterocarps

They are known to grow to towering heights, with some species reaching over 80m (36 floors):

They have buttress roots, which are large, sturdy roots that spread out from the tree base. These anchor the tree and provide stability:

They also produce seeds usually with 2 long wings, from which their name comes from ("Dipteros" is Greek for "2-winged" while "karpos" means "fruit"):
