About the nature trail

This easy trail takes you around the park and stops at various attractions along the way.

Quick facts about the trail

  • Difficulty level: Easy
  • Distance: 10km
  • Estimated walking time: 3 hours

There are 3 main areas that can be explored separately:

  • Mangrove forest
  • Kitchen Garden
  • Butterfly Garden

Mangrove forest

Distance: 1.5km

Estimated walking time: 1 to 2 hours

This dense, 6-hectare mangrove forest acts as a buffer between the land and sea by breaking the waves to prevent erosion of the coast. It is home to an array of plants and animals, which you can observe from the safety of a boardwalk.

Highlights include:

  • Plants: Try to identify the stilt-like roots of the Bakau Minyak, pencil roots of the Api-Api Putih and conical-shaped roots of the Perepat. Another highlight is the Nipah Palm, which provides the Attap Chee used in local dessert ice kachang.
  • Animals: Stroll through the boardwalk and keep your eyes peeled for the Giant Mudskipper, Mud Lobster or Telescope Snail.
  • Birdwatching tower: Climb a 3-storey birdwatching tower for a chance to spy the White-collared Kingfisher or Black-naped Oriole. Between April and September, you may even spot the Blue-throated Bee-eater.
  • Jetty: Pause here to admire the scenery, and see if you can spot birds or marine life such as fish, water snakes and eels.

Note

You can also sign up for a guided tour of the mangroves (available during school holidays).

Kitchen Garden

Distance: 400m

Estimated walking time: 45 minutes

This volunteer-run area showcases herbs and plants that we consume in our daily lives. Keep your eyes peeled for:

  • Plants with culinary purposes: The leaves of the Sugar Leaf Plant are a natural sweetener and can be used as a substitute for sugar, while those from the Lemon Grass plant are used in curries, teas and more.
  • Plants with medicinal purposes: Spotted Snapweed is traditionally used to treat skin diseases and Common Mugwort may be used to improve blood circulation and treat intestinal illnesses.

Note

Do not pluck or remove any plants from the garden.

Butterfly Garden

Located near Carpark C, the Butterfly Garden is just a short walk away from the Kitchen Garden or mangrove forest.

Look out for the following species:

  • Plain Tiger: Identifiable by its beautiful orange forewings, this is one of the most common species in Singapore.
  • Blue Glassy Tiger: This native species has bluish-grey wings.
